Sudden Cardiac Arrest can strike anywhere, at any time.  That's why there needs to be more defibrillators out in the community – in the home, at work, and the places where we like to play!

In fact, our goal is to get a defibrillator within 1 minute of wherever you happen to be – that's the only way to save more lives.

The AED's listed below will suit most circumstances and budgets – even the most expensive one is around the same price as a high-end TV, the main difference being that the AED can save a life.

An AED is simple and easy to use and requires no certification. It will not shock the patient unless they need to be shocked.

How do I choose an AED

An AED can be purchased by individuals and organisations of all types to enhance their first aid capabilities and response.

Department of Health does not recommend a particular brand or model of defibrillator for public use.

Consider the features of a defibrillator that best suit your situation.

Please ensure your unit of choice:

• is purchased from an Australian supplier

• has Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approval

• is within your budget

• meets your requirements (eg child electrode pads, storage cabinets, 24/7 security option)

• has a high IP Rating suitable for outdoor use (IP55 or above)

• includes training for AED use and maintenance.

• confirms maintenance requirements and

warranty periods

What does an AED do?

A Defibrillator is an important device that can save lives.

It's used when someone's heart stops beating suddenly, a situation known as Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). This can happen because of different health problems.

Every year, over 30,000 people experience SCA. Sadly, if they don't get immediate help through defibrillation and CPR, less than 5% make it. The longer someone waits for defibrillation, the lower their chances of survival – it drops by 10% with each passing minute.

But, if a Defibrillator is used quickly, within the first few minutes of the cardiac arrest, the chances of surviving can go up to 70%. That's why it's really important for more people to know about Defibrillators, where to find them, and how to use them.

When do you use an AED ?

When someone is not responding – that is, you cannot wake them up – that is the time to call 000 and send for an AED. If the person is not breathing normally, which may include no breathing at all or unusual sounds like gasping or snoring, it's time to initiate CPR and use the AED as quickly as possible.
