This is simply unacceptable!
Today we reached a sad statistic in the fight against Coronavirus in Australia. The total death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 74. Sadly, that is around about the same number of people that die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Australia EVERY DAY. This is not intended to diminish or downplay the deaths from COVID in any way. I just want to highlight the death and loss that we as Australians experience EVERY SINGLE DAY because of what could be considered, preventable deaths.
We have seen how quicky the world reacted to COVID-19, and the extent of measures that were put in place to protect society. We have also seen how effective the putting in place of measures has been - particularly here in Australia. In some ways, the measures seemed extreme - described by some as draconian, even - but the success of the measures relied upon one thing - ACTION! We needed the community to "buy into" the adoption of the measures in order for them to work - and by and large, we had that buy-in, and the result of National adoption of social distancing speaks for itself. We seem to have been able to flatten the curve within a matter of a few weeks!
There ARE measures that we as a society can put into place to reduce the number of deaths from Sudden Cardiac Arrest - and they are nowhere near as imposing as those that were placed upon the nation in order to bring the death rate and infection rate for COVID-19 under control.
LEARN CPR AND BUY AN AED FOR YOUR HOME, BUSINESS, WORKPLACE, COMMUNITY GROUP OR OTHER PLACE WHERE YOU SPEND TIME - AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE THESE TWO THINGS WHEN NEEDED.
That is all it will take to help reduce the death rate from Sudden Cardiac Arrest - hardly an imposition compared to closing down businesses left, right and centre. Hardly an imposition compared to limiting the ways in which we are allowed to interact with our friends, families and loved ones. Hardly an imposition compared to the major disruption of our schools and education for our leaders of the future.
Let's be smart about this Australia - act now to prevent these avoidable deaths! We have shown that we know how to band together to prevent death and disease at tough times. The death rate from SCA is way too high in Australia - we CAN, and MUST act now to bring it down. It is simply, UNACCEPTABLE to leave it this way given the result we have achieved together for reducing the impact of COVID-19.
