An IP rating for AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in Australia, or anywhere else, refers to the "Ingress Protection" rating. This rating tells you how well the AED is protected against the entry of solid objects (like dust and dirt) and liquids (like water). The rating for AEDs is made up of two numbers.

1. The first number (0-6) shows the device's protection level against solids, with 6 offering the highest level of protection, meaning it's fully dust-tight.

2. The second number (0-9) indicates how resistant the device is to moisture or water. The higher this number, the better the device can handle wet conditions, with 9 indicating the device can withstand powerful water jets or even immersion under certain conditions.

For example, if an AED has an IP rating of IP67, the '6' means it's totally protected against dust, and the '7' means it can be immersed in water up to a meter deep for a short time. This rating helps you understand where and how you can safely use and store the AED, especially important in outdoor or industrial environments.
